John's ministry is a ministry appropriate to crisis. He is willing to take on the attitude of extremism because any other response in the face of such a crisis would be an unfaithful response to the call of God. Most of us live too comfortably to hear such a call. It would revolutionize the Church at a time when revolution has lost its respectability. Unlike John, we are ready to "repaint" the old rather than repent.
