Meeting 10: Finding God in the
American Culture
v
Opening prayer:
Music, Scripture (Mark
12:13-18), poetry, environment.
v
Check-in:
How am I feeling as I begin
this meeting? (10 minutes total)
v
Theme
(read aloud): God cannot be
enculturated. There is no economic or political system that
embodies the freedom of God. The dominant royal consciousness
uses the “God is on our side” shibboleth to maintain its
privilege. It’s the Temple Imperialism of the Pharaohs. In
contrast is the Prophetic Politics of Justice and Compassion of
Moses and the Hebrews of the Exodus, of people everywhere seeking
deliverance from what oppresses them. God is the God of freedom,
wherever there is oppression in any given system or struggle.
v
Reflection
(facilitator read): Where do I
see oppressive privilege in the American system? Where do I see
struggle for freedom? What in it do I claim? What in it do I
resist? Short silence (2-3 min)
v
Sharing
(facilitator introduce): What
struck me in this reflection? + + + After the sharings,
members may add anything else they wish, or ask for feedback from
the group. Brief prayer.
