Trinity Sunday
Reading I: Prv 8:22-31
II: Rom 5:1-5
Gospel
John 16:12-15
12 "I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
Interesting Details
- This reading is part of the long discourse during the Last Supper.
- (v. 12) "You cannot bear it now": There are many things that the disciples did not understand by the time of the discourse for at least two reasons. First, Jesus has not gone through His death and resurrection. Second, the disciples needed help to understand what Jesus reveals. The Paraclete, meaning advocate, will provide the help.
- (v. 13) "The Spirit of Truth": There were many false accusations against Jesus, but the truth is that Jesus is the Son of God.
- (v. 13) "He will guide you to all truth": guidance means both an intellectual understanding and a way of life through which we will understand Jesus more clearly.
- (v. 13) "Things that are coming" are not new truths, because Jesus is already the revelation of God. What is coming is what that same revelation would mean for each future generation.
- (v. 14) "He will glorify me": He will make clear the true nature of Jesus, Son of God.
- (v. 15) "Everything the Father has is mine" shows a unity between the Father and Jesus. The mention of the Father here also indicates that the Father sends the Holy Spirit, while in Jn 16:7 Jesus said, "I will send Him to you."
One Main Point
The Holy Spirit comes from both the Father and the Son. He helps us, here and now, understand and live the truth of the Father that is revealed to us in the Son.
Reflections
- To what extent do I understand and live the truth that Jesus reveals, here and now?
- In what way does the revelation of the Trinity touch my life?
